Le Batueau

I was resigned. A tuesday night was meant to be the most boring, characterless night of the week, a night for staying in, drinking tea and watching telly. The most exciting think would be to venture outside to buy a pint of milk and hope that the kids wouldn’t abuse me – too much.

But salvation was forthcoming – a simple, B&W poster, showing a glamorous lady with red lipstick, promised 'glam punk electro new wave now' every tuesday at Le Bateau, the well known Duke Street venue, for a meagre £2. How could I resist?

Ladies, ladyboys and gentlemen, let me introduce you to Adult Books, quite simply one of the coolest new(ish) club nights in Liverpool. It was one of the best surprises in indie club la-la-land last year, getting increasingly popular mostly on word-of-mouth-to-mouth, and this term matured into the sexy sleazy cool place to be on a Tuesday evening.

Adult Books is the brainchild of Chris Ward and Zoe Alex, of ace local band Automation. If you’ve seen them live you won’t be surprised by the fact that the club soundtrack is littered with the best of 80’s pop, punk and glam rock. You will intoxicate yourself with cheap lager, shake your bits to the hits of T-Rex, Blondie, Franz Ferdinand, and, mercifully, no Kaiser Chiefs or Bravery will show up to disturb your night of guilty pleasures.

That’s the best thing about Adult Books – it’s a cool and increasingly popular night, but it’s not like your usual student disco that plays just about any NME-hype band with little regard for quality. Maybe that’s why, even though it always gets a good crowd, there’s still a vibe of 'best kept secret' about Adult Books. Some cool people still go there, and no Oasis fans are in sight. That’ll do for me. I’m saved. Tuesdays nights are finally cool. Shame on the rest of the week!
